Advisory boards and commissions provide opportunities for community participation on projects, programs and issues concerning the City and its residents. Each board and commission has different roles, responsibilities and focus areas. For more information, visit blm.mn/boards.
The City is in the process of developing a board and commission policy to:
- Establish fair and consistent guidelines for the recruitment, application, appointment and orientation of new members for City boards and commissions.
- Ensure transparency for the public.

get some people on these teams that actually get things done, Bloomington is not the city it once was we need strong, realistic leadership in all areas, including these positions

City council members and city employees should not be on commissions since it could create conflicts of interest.
Every board and commission should have a similar number of proponents and opponents, with some appointed by a group of residents or business owners that have an interest in the subject. This may cause lots of debate and delay but will inevitably end up with well thought out plans that take into account ALL the issues. If these diverse opinions come together and agree on a plan, it would likely be embraced by more residents.

Qualities, skills, and background
Anyone that serves on a board should be able to clearly explain "Why" they are on the board, as in the "Why" described by Simon Sinek https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en They need to be excellent listeners and only interested in solving problems collaboratively. No room for lone wolfs in community leadership. I think that background is less important than having a passion for the board/commission they are applying to join. If someone can demonstrate that they can achieve things collaboratively, are passionate about improving our city, and are interested in serving they should be given a chance to serve.
