PLAYGROUND BEST PRACTICES FOR MOIR PARK

INTEGRATING INCLUSIVITY & ACCESSIBILITY

These Inclusivity & Accessibility best practices for equipment selection and design will be applied to the playground improvements at Moir park.

  • The ‘Coolest Thing’ should have both elevated and ground level inclusive features.
  • Play elements should encourage and provide opportunities for social play for all.
  • The play environment should provide a range of sensory stimuli.
  • Play features offering different levels of challenge in each zone.
  • Similar play events should be grouped to support joint experience.
  • Access to play is comfortable, intuitive, and minimize surprise.
  • Unitary surfacing provides access to key play features for everyone.
  • Containment through landscaping, barriers, and earthwork to promote safety.
  • Wayfinding and intuitive entry points to make play approachable and enticing.
  • Quite places for rest, decompression, and self-regulation.
  • Communicating inclusive features online and onsite to support trip planning and use.


AN INTUITIVE, EXCITING, & APPROACHABLE PLAY EXPERIENCE

The playground Design Framework below applies best practices to create a play environment that supports a dynamic, safe, and approachable play experience for everyone.

  • A 2-5 year old play area close to the park building and shelter supporting human comfort and child care give observation.
  • A 5-12 year old play area adjacent but separate from the 2-5 play area supporting sibling play experiences and multi-child caregiver observation.
  • Shaded low stimuli areas located throughout the play environment providing comfortable areas to rest and decompress.
  • A multi-age dynamic movement zone adjacent to main play features providing sensory stimulation and social play opportunities for all ages.
  • Hillside play rounds out the play experience with accessible features at varying levels of challenge and integrates the play environment into the landscape.
  • A nature play area with un-programmed open play options as an entrée into the park’s wider nature play programming.
