Lyndale Avenue Retrofit
Consultation has concluded
Lyndale Avenue is one of Bloomington’s original and oldest commercial corridors. It serves the entire City; but also functions as a neighborhood “main street” to many residents, businesses, and employers. Lyndale Avenue continues to thrive, although it is aging and is not realizing its full potential. Revitalization will help Lyndale Avenue to meet changing community needs and ensure future economic sustainability.
The City of Bloomington, in partnership with Hennepin County and Stantec Consulting Services, has been working to define a clear vision and strategy to attract reinvestment and new development in the Lyndale Corridor (generally I-494 to 98th Street). TheContinue reading

The City of Bloomington, in partnership with Hennepin County and Stantec Consulting Services, has been working to define a clear vision and strategy to attract reinvestment and new development in the Lyndale Corridor (generally I-494 to 98th Street). The goal is to transform this auto-oriented street into a walkable and multi-use corridor. This will take time and involve continued input from the community and neighborhood property and business owners. The Lyndale Avenue Retrofit strategy will build on the corridor’s main assets: jobs, adjacent residential neighborhoods, and the existing mix of businesses.
The strategy identifies opportunities for public and private investment, providing a variety of housing and mobility options, attractive and accessible public spaces, and active commercial areas to serve residents, employees, and visitors.
Public engagement has been an essential part of the process. Early in the study, area business owners, artists, residents, and City officials provided input, and guidance to shape the plan. Interactive workshops and events held at schools and locations around the area gave youth and other community members a chance to offer ideas. This input helped define a vision for the future of the Lyndale Avenue Corridor.

Lyndale Avenue Vision Statement
about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. The City’s consultant has drafted a vision statement, based off of initial study of the Lyndale Avenue Corridor and feedback from the community – what people love, what they dislike and what they want to see more of. Tell us if we got it correct. We value your feedback to make this a vision statement that reflects the community’s desires. This is a working draft so we’re looking for continued input.
- Lyndale Avenue is a dynamic, walkable boulevard that connects a series of vibrant and distinctive neighborhoods along one, cohesive corridor.
- It is the cultural heart of the community, with a diverse population and interests that embrace equitable and safe neighborhoods for all.
- The corridor includes a series of destinations to live, dine, play, and work—preserving Bloomington’s unique history, while providing a framework to build new and exciting experiences.
- Public gathering places are conveniently accessible and reinforced with a range of restaurant and shopping destinations.
- Opportunities to preserve and enhance the environment are incorporated into future growth, creating a place where nature meets business.
Question 1
What excites you about the draft vision statement and why?
lakobowover 3 years agoDining and Breweries
For this to a public community area, we need fewer car repair shops and more restaurants, tap rooms, and places of gathering. Patios will be important here too, but no one will want to sit on a patio if you're next to a heavy flow of traffic or a car wash.
1Proud Eastsiderover 3 years agoThe vision of a place to play and gather. It brings to mind a place to picnic or park over lunch and enjoy trees and fresh air.
Like Roosevelt Park in Richfield
3Citizenover 3 years ago0 excites me. Fear more low income housing, more crime, more noise, more delinquents & loss of traffic lanes.
0anitasmithsonover 3 years agoWalkability, cultural heart of City, mixed use
Love the idea that this area could be walkable. Love the idea that it could be a cultural center of the community. Would love to see an opportunity be made to help a diverse array of shops get established. The ideas presented are part of the future I’d like to see.
3lakobowover 3 years agoWalkability
I love the idea of a walkable zone but that often means being able to walk away from heavy, fast traffic. To make it walkable I'd like to see well-maintained sidewalks moved away from the street, and/or a way to slow or reduce traffic on Lyndale.

MLBloomover 3 years agoBloomington itself is not bike friendly, so a bike lane on Lyndale probably wouldn't get a lot of use. Want more detail of plans.
