Speed Limits on Larger City Roadways

August 1, 2024 - Have a Safe Drive:  GO 25!

The new citywide speed limit of 25 miles per hour (unless posted otherwise) went into effect on August 1, 2024. Other cities in the region, like Richfield and Edina, have already implemented 25 mph speed limits for neighborhood roads.

Driving slower is good for you and your neighbors. This change makes neighborhood roads safer in many ways, including:

• Reduced likelihood of crashes and injuries resulting from crashes.
• Increased safety for pedestrians and cyclists

Background:  On September 18^th, 2023, the Bloomington City Council approved changing the speed limit for local/neighborhood streets to 25 MPH. Staff are proposing speed limit changes for larger city streets next.

The proposed changes have been informed by the context of existing roadways, feedback already received from the Neighborhood Transportation Management Plan (NTMP) engagement, past and recent studies regarding effective speed limits, and engineering judgement.
