Bloomington Citywide Creative Placemaking Plan Update

Following the Creative Placemaking Commission’s approval of Bloomington’s Creative Placemaking Plan, it was presented to City Council on March 3, 2025, and was approved unanimously! The Bloomington Citywide Creative Placemaking Plan and Appendices documents are available on the Creative Placemaking website page, under the documents tab. Thank you to community members, arts organization leaders, Creative Placemaking Commissioners, Advisory Committee, artists, and City staff whose voices helped shape the plan to make Bloomington a more vibrant place! Bloomington’s Creative Placemaking Plan is now in the third phase – data analyzation and plan drafting. Consultants at Forecast Public Art, in partnership with TENxTEN and Creative Community Builders, have analyzed what was learned over the past several months from the survey, 20 artist engagements activities, individual and small group stakeholder interviews, asset mapping, advisory committee, and a policy roundtable to develop a final draft of the plan. Creative Placemaking Commissioners will vote on approving the plan at the regular meeting on February 5, 2025

Writer, artist & educator Rupa Shenoy-Thadhani invites participants to create poetry that speaks to their dreams in their own language at a two-hour workshop hosted at The Works Museum. This is the final artist engagement project for the Creative Placemaking Citywide Plan. What do we dream of and wish for in Bloomington? What are the languages in which we imagine Bloomington? Through freewriting exercises and close readings of other poems participants will delve into the emotions, images and languages to create art and poetry.

No prior experience in poetry is required. All levels are welcome to participate.

This is a workshop that is part of a series of five events created and led by Writer, Artist and Educator Rupa ShenoyThadhani and commissioned by Creative Placemaking in The City of Bloomington and supported by The Works Museum.

Join Adrian Lowe's Artist Engagement event for the Creative Placemaking Citywide Plan at the Works Museum where science and art meet through chromatography. Participants will explore the hidden beauty of colors by separating pigments from markers and making coffee filter flowers. This event offers a unique opportunity to uncover the science behind color blending.

There are 2 opportunities to engage with Artist Katie Ross this weekend and do some Mindful Weaving! Participants are asked to reflect on "What makes you Bloom in Bloomington?" using simple materials to craft a woven piece of art that embody personal reflections and intentions. Katie Ross will lead a mindful weaving activity where she invites participants to reflect on "what makes you bloom in Bloomington?" using simple materials to craft a woven piece of art that embody personal reflections and intentions.

Erin Lavelle will be leading a sensory experience, inviting visitors to taste edible and delicious flowers. She’ll offer a zine called ‘Stop! and Taste the Flowers’ featuring a few varieties easily found in your garden, neighborhood and the wild, accompanied by recipes for preparation and preservation.

This is an invitation for book lovers in Bloomington to come out and swap their books! Farmer's Market attendees can also participate in an activity of creating poetry and taking pictures of the poems created. Connect with artist Rupa Shenoy-Thadhani to discuss your affinities or interests, and how the City should develop the city-wide Creative Placemaking Plan.

Latino Nature Fest (formerly Latino Nature Conservation Week) was celebrated by over 750 people with vibrant displays of arts, nature, and cultural performances and activities on July 20th at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Education and Visitor's Center. Activities coordinated by Indigenous Roots featured performances by Kuyayki Peru and Alma Andina, as well as alebrijes, plant art, mini-piñatas and more.

Artist Erin Lavelle was at the Creative Placemaking table, inviting visitors to taste native flowers, distributing pocket-sized ‘Field Notes’ booklets and pencils, and having casual conversations about the Refuge as a "Third Place" to be featured in her forthcoming field guide. The idea of tasting a flower intrigued some and surprised others.
